After two glorious years featuring Ladue Estates, ModernSTL is celebrating Preservation Month by turning its sights on Harwood Hills, one of St. Louis County’s most endangered mid-century neighborhoods.
This self-guided tour features a minimum of 4 open homes that highlight this historic subdivision’s importance while keeping in mind its biggest challenge: the teardown.
Developed in the 1950s by builder Burton Duenke in collaboration with master architect Ralph Fournier, Des Peres’ Harwood Hills was conceived as a continuation of Duenke’s vision for homes that were “the finest definition of contemporary planning and design.” The development originally boasted five unique floor plans as well as custom homes and was a showcase for modern living. Today Harwood Hills is home to committed residents dedicated to its preservation, but despite their efforts, high property values and large lots have prompted years’ worth of teardowns which threaten the neighborhood’s historic integrity.
Join us to learn firsthand why preserving our threatened mid-century neighborhoods is so important, and enjoy a rare peek at some of the best that Harwood Hills has to offer.
The self-guided tour begins at 1431 Fawnvalley Drive. If you’re not yet a member of ModernSTL, join now to take advantage of the reduced event price. We look forward to seeing you there.
