Council Plaza: Exceptionally Significant

.
Council Plaza is located at 212-300 S. Grand Boulevard and consists of two residential towers, a two-story commercial building over covered parking and the space-age Phillips 66 service station that is now a Del Taco restaurant. These buildings were built between 1964 and 1968. In 2007, the National Park Service placed Council Plaza on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district despite their relatively young age. The listing affirmed that Council Plaza had “exceptional significance” under National Register guidelines and could be listed ahead of its 50th birthday.

My grandparents moved in here in the late 60s after a two year stint on the waiting list. Then it was called the Teamster’s Plaza and Council House Apts. They had so many amenities; fantastic dining room, cocktails before dinner every evening. All residents who could, dressed up and came to dinner every night. Saturday evenings they had late dinner and dancing often with live bands. My grandparents loved every moment of living here and volunteered often to keep costs under control. The average age of a resident at my grandmother’s 90th birthay celebration in the dining room was 94! Difficult to find a residence that respects the people who live there the way the Teamsters did their retirees. It didn’t do nearly as well after it sold.
