In July 2011, the Planning Commission approved a plan that entails demolition of W.A. Sarmiento’s New Formalist AAA Building of 1976. The plan comes from Indianapolis developers who propose building a CVS drug store on the site. Alderman Terry Kennedy (D-18), who represents the area that includes the site, has not offered support for the proposal. Read more here.

Dorsa Building Interior

Since the Dorsa Building’s foreclosure in 2008, the fate of its sumptuous art moderne interior — which was once the showroom and theater for a dress line — has been uncertain. The new owners are trying to lease the space and ultimately will leave the interior’s future to tenant choice. Read more about the interior here.

In October 2010, the Belleville City Council voted 14-1 to accept a gift to pay off the loan on the city-owned former hotel. The catch? The donor wants the art deco building demolished for a park. Read more here.
